During World War II, the federal government removed over 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese descent (both foreign-born “issei” and native-born “nisei”) from the West Coast and interned in camps. President Roosevelt authorized the internments with his Executive Order No. 9066, issued on February 19, 1942. You will be looking at FDR’s Executive Order No. 9066 (1942). 1) Explain the circumstances of this executive order and who it addresses specifically, what prompted this?.
2) Had any exclusions existed previously in the United States? What were they, who did they apply to and when (hint, look to the 1880s)?
3) What are the Constitutional issues with this case, and what occurred in the Korematsu vs. United States supreme court case of 1944?

COLD WAR PROPAGANDA
The Cold War era was one of an intense diplomatic, proxy, and global conflict between the two binary superpowers of the United States and the Soviet Union, each seeking to make wins on each other through any means possible, including things like the space race, arms build-up, and regular propaganda. Examine the two Soviet propaganda posters and answer the following questions in complete sentences. Each question should have support for your position.

2) Is there value in studying a rival’s propaganda against your own country, and how effective is propaganda. Where do we see the same tools and tactics that make propaganda effective in our daily lives?
3) Propaganda like this shaped the Soviet people’s view of the United States. Imagine you are an American – how would you explain the criticisms leveled in these posters to a Soviet citizen?
